Can i get this finish off my wheels some how? The finish is starting to go and I’ve never been crazy about shiny wheels, so id like to paint them. I don’t want to get different wheels because I don’t feel like paying for that and being 94 M edition wheels I think they are the lightest stock wheels for an NA.

You could send them out to be sandblasted then powder coated.
As for doing it yourself...I dunno.

Was just reminded about plastidip, which seems like the cheapest/simplest route. If i had more money to burn id definitely go with powdercoating.

Thinking of going with a matte finish that contrast with the body paint

I recently made the same decision on my Mustang. It has rare chrome wheels that are worth a fortune, but I hate the chrome look. I decided on Plastidip just for resale value if I ever needed to go back to the chrome. Granted, it’s not as durable as paint but a little touch up from time to time keeps them looking nice and current.
Make sure you don’t cheap out too much and only spray a coat or two. It’s a major pain to remove (if you ever decide to) if you have less than 4-5 coats.

consider using a bit of sand paper around where the chrome is peeling/coming off.
if there is a lip there, it will become more pronounced after a few coats of plastidip.

Plastidip is the way to go. Just make sure to apply multiple coats.
1. So it will be more durable
2. So you can peel it of easier if you don’t like it
Just be careful with black wheels on a miata. A completely black wheel will make it look really tiny. However, you can use a neat trick where you paint it all black and run a xacto knife along the lip to pull back the the paint leaving a nice polished lip. Makes it look a little better in my opinion.

Was planning on going with a matte silver or darker grey, but not black

I agree, I got a gunmetal color, just enough contrast to the tire for me is nice. Black just washes it all out.

You can Plastidip, then paint over it if they don’t have Plasti in the color you want. Still removable.
Also, I went with matte on the M3. It turned out pretty cool.
